Jazz Stroud Presents: Wattstax

Film and live music

Jazz Stroud Presents: Wattstax

Friday 16th March 7pm
SVA, The Good Shed, Stroud GL5 3AP

Jazz Stroud presents the legendary “black Woodstock” Wattstax, Mel Stuart's documentary of the epochal 1972 concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Featuring incendiary performances by Isaac Hayes, Albert King, Rufus and Carla Thomas, the Staple Singers, the Emotions, the Bar-Kays, and other greats of soul, R&B, and gospel — plus biting humor from a then little-known Richard Pryor — Wattstax is more than a concert film. It also captures a heady moment in mid-1970s, "black-is-beautiful" African-American culture, when Los Angeles's black community came together just seven years after the Watts riots to celebrate its survival and a renewed hope in its future. There will be also be live music from Funk in Sessions house band after the film screening.

Sailing Stones + Dear Robot

Live music

Sailing Stones is the musical moniker of singer songwriter Jenny Lindfors. Both elegiac and mesmerizing there are classic soundtrack influences from the likes of Blade Runner and Paris, Texas and heroes such as Neil Young and Fleetwood Mac, there’s also some deft synth work, intricate vocal layers and glacial tones and post soul, jazz infused melodies and wind accompaniments that recall tUne-yArds. With airplay from radio titans such as Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson on 6Music, it seems things are ever on the up for one of the UK’s most exciting new musical talents.
