Artic
Video artist Reuben Knutson and musician/composer Pete
Judge (under
the name Artic) have just completed an
Elixir residency in Gloucestershire Royal
Hospital. Elixir is placing eight artists in
eight hospital depar tments to make films that explore the invisible
or less
understood activities of the hospital.
This film, along with others from
artists around the country, selected
by SVA and artNucleus, will make up the two-year programme of Elixir
Screenings.

This
film is a tribute to restlessness.
The staff of the Haematology Department carry out an endless dance
built out of small gestures, shifts of location, and the darting movements
of expert eyes. In ‘A Thousand Days’, so-called because
of the 1,000 or so blood samples that pass through the depar tment
each day, Artic have sought to capture this dance.
The soundtrack is made up of the
department’s electromagnetic activity,
blips, clicks and whirrs of its everyday
soundscape, and culminates in the
appearance of the 22-strong Haematology Choir.
