Reassurance Across the Aeons: An exhibition of drawings, prints and research that celebrate the mysterious and diverse landscapes of wetlands by artist Dougal Kirkland.
Boglands are thin places at the edge of culture. They are mysterious and difficult to define. These marginal, diverse landscapes reflect something of the queer experience.
Reassurance Across the Aeons, which opens at the SVA gallery on halloween, Friday 31st October, will celebrate the diversity, archeology, ecology and cultural significance of wetlands. large scale multimedia landscape drawings, artefact drawings and experimental prints along with an accompanying essay on these landscapes and their ecologies from a queer perspective.
The title for the show: ‘Reassurance across the Aeons’ comes from an observation made by a conservator after an intimate moment handling an Iron Age bog body. She describes the urge towards tenderness when handling these person’s remains and a shared humanity across time.
Dougal studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths (2017) and his Postgraduate at The Royal Drawing School (2023). This work brings together several years of his ongoing explorations into our exuberant wetlands.
