LOSS«»GAIN present Dumbworld Drive By Shooting.

Drive by Shooting is a 10-minute, graffiti-style, animated opera to be projected after dark over four evenings onto the John Street Gallery window. With the visuals running on a loop, audio can be accessed via a downloadable smartphone app for £1.99 (IOS, £2.39 Android) available here. Bring your own headphones.

As with much opera, it’s a story of passion and revenge. But this one plays out the age-old scene of betrayal on a grimy city street, as two octogenarians on Zimmer frames stage a hit on a cheating partner. An old woman discovers her husband of 60 years has been having an affair with the next door neighbour and chases after him threatening to “shoot the fecker in the pecker” - Dublinspeak for “shoot the very bad man where it hurts the most”. The woman’s friend tries to stop her, only to be won over by the simple argument that the wronged wife will be better taken care of in prison than on her pitiful pension.

Written and directed by John McIlduff, with a huge soundtrack composed by Brian Irvine, Drive by Shooting is a funny and surprising micro-opera designed to be projected onto city walls and windows, giving audiences a taste of opera’s musical and theatrical power outside the confines of the opera house.

Created by Dumbworld and Irish National Opera. Performed by Doreen Curran and Sylvia O’Brien with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra conducted by Fergus Shiel.
