Workshop
The Plants Can Dance workshop is a hands-on interactive experience created by sound artist and DJ Brian d'Souza (also known as Auntie Flo) that turns the natural electrical signals of plants and fungi into live ambient music. Living organisms, like plants and fungi, produce unique electronic signals and data that, when connected to synthesizers and other equipment, can be converted into sound and music: a process called biosonification.
How It Works
Biosonification: Sensors attach to leaves or stems to pick up micro-fluctuations in a plant's bioelectricity.
Modular Synths: The electrical data routes into synthesizers to create twinkling, slowly changing musical notes.
Environmental Responses: The music shifts in real-time as the plant reacts to sunlight, touch, or watering.
What Happens at the Workshop
Experimentation: Participants can touch and interact with the equipment to hear how different plants sound.
Science and Sound: Sessions explore the biological reasons behind plant movements and signals.
Immersive Spaces: Many events feature deep-listening environments surrounded by greenery, sometimes paired with related activities like pot painting or synth building.

SVA is working with Zerodig Farm and Curriculum For Life to lead a creative engagement programme led that brings together young creatives, families, and artists to explore the intersection of science, farming, and global stories through participatory art. The aim is to learn about soil culture through creative practice and inspire a more imaginative connection to our local landscape. The project is funded by the European Union through the funded for the Soil Tribes programme Horizon project.
Zerodig is a not-for-profit social enterprise focusing on soil restoration to increase the quality and volume of nutrient rich food production.
