Millinery exhibition

  • Stroud Valley Artspace 4 John Street STROUD, GL5 2HA (map)

Thurs - Saturdays 10am - 3pm

Millinery, the art of hat-making, has a rich and evolving fashion history that has long intersected with nightlife. Millinery After Dark is a group exhibition celebrating the work of contemporary milliners, bringing together some of their most expressive and imaginative creations.

Drawing on centuries-old techniques and closely guarded knowledge, millinery offers many possibilities for artistic experimentation and reinvention. The exhibition displays work from emerging milliners who are reinterpreting traditional craftsmanship through experimentation, sculptural forms and expressive design.

Using traditional techniques, stretching felt hoods over wooden blocks to stitching straw on Victorian 17 guinea sewing machines, these designers transform traditional materials into exaggerated silhouettes and poetic, sculptural forms. Their work challenges conventional ideas of scale, structure and function, pushing the boundaries of what a hat can be and where it belongs.

Millinery After Dark explores the space where fashion, art, architecture and nightlife meet. Moving beyond traditional notions of headwear, the exhibition presents hats as wearable sculptures, objects of artistic expression and playful statements of identity, celebrating the enduring relevance and radical potential of millinery today.
