Soma Soma
Journeying through Afro-Brazilian influenced grooves, that can only be described as their own Soma Soma sound. Soma Soma are an 8-piece band from Bristol, UK, who offer an exciting mix of world music styles that can only be described as their own Soma Soma sound.
Driving percussion, vintage horns, and hypnotic guitar lines work together to seamlessly blend Brazilian styles (Samba/Bossa Nova/Arrocha) with African (Highlife/Afrobeat/Soukous) genres to create something completely new and exciting.
They are able to take traditional rhythms and infuse them with a modern energy that keeps the audience captivated throughout their performances.
One of the most striking aspects of Soma Soma’s music is the use of Portuguese lyrics in their songs, which adds an exotic and mysterious element to their sound. Even for those who don’t understand the language, the vocal performances are said to be powerful and emotive, conveying the passion and intensity of the music.
Soma Soma is a fantastic live act that will transport you to a new world of afro/brazilian music and spread pure feelings of connection, joy and nostalgia.
Coco Dos Pretos
Hailing from Recife, Brazil, Coco dos Pretos have proven themselves as a symbol of resilience, and cultural significance. Since 2006, the group has pioneered an innovative approach to the traditional coco rhythm, expanding and refining its sound while staying rooted in ancestral heritage.
Based in the Chão de Estrelas community, the group not only holds rehearsals but also leads a meaningful socio-cultural initiative dedicated to preserving and promoting Afro-descendant culture. Through their work, they challenge the stigmas often attached to popular traditions such as coco, and above all, they celebrate and strengthen Afro-Brazilian
identity and expression.
For the past 10 years, Coco dos Pretos has led the itinerant project “Onde é que Tá o Coco?” (“Where is the Coco?”), fostering exchanges with masters, teachers, and community groups of coco throughout the regions they visit.
In 2023, the group launched the first edition of the Canjerê Project by Coco dos Pretos—a landmark gathering dedicated to encounter, communion, and exchange within Afro-Indigenous cultural traditions.. The Canjerê, aside from promoting and safeguarding culture, is a reunion, a grand meeting of exchange and ancestral knowledge where musicality, art, culture, theatre, and dance, whereby Coco dos Pretos reaffirm the sacred, historical and ancestral legaices of their community. The event brings together masters, teachers, cultural leaders, and guardians of popular traditions. In addition to concerts, cultural performances, and artistic interventions, the program emphasizes knowledge transmission through workshops, seminars, and dialogue circles. An approach which establishes an Afro-pedagogical practice, engaging artists, practitioners, and communities in a powerful cycle of shared wisdom and positive energy.
