Dean Kenning Artist Talk

Introduced by Dr John Cussans

Invisible College Stroud Presents The Art, Ecology and Science Fiction Talks

Friday 9th August 5.30-7pm

SVA, 4 John Street, Stroud, GL5 2HA

Dean Kenning’s artworks range from kinetic sculptures to videos and diagrams, often employing DIY, allegorical and autodidactic methods and modes of representation.

He has had solo exhibitions at Matt’s Gallery, Beaconsfield and Piper Keys and he has exhibited in many group shows including at the ICA, Greene Naftali (NY) and BAK (Utrecht). He is a member of the Capital Drawing Group and the Social Morphologies Research Unit. He has published articles in journals such as Third Text, Art Monthly and Mute on the politics of art and art education. He is a Researcher at Kingston School of Art and also teaches Fine Art at Central St Martins.

Dean will speak about machines and vitalism in relation to kinetic sculptures and diagrams made for his two recent solo exhibitions in London: The Origin of Life at Beaconsfield Gallery (2019) - an interactive sound installation involving twenty-one old synth keyboards played by flaccid rubber ‘fingers’ triggered by the movement of visitors around the space, and Psychobotanical at Matts Gallery (2019) - whose centrepiece was a jerking silicon ‘plant'. The theme will be explored with special reference to science fiction and horror.
